Case study #3 - Separation of four energy utilities

Case study #3 -
Separation of four energy utilities

Fusion Consulting was engaged by the four state energy utilities as independent consultants to program manage, mediate shared commercial settlements and manage external vendors in the final separation of the primary company’s IT processes, commercial arrangements, staff and shared infrastructure. This is Fusion’s signature engagement that was highly successful within a complex stakeholder environment.

The scope included all IT applications, IT services, commercial contracts, service agreements, infrastructure and personnel. Nick undertook the role of overall Program Manager of a blended team of staff and FCS consultants responsible for delivering a complex change program for the four businesses. The governance structure included all four CFOs and CIOs of all four utilities.

The program ran for approximately two years with multiple phases involved, from early planning through to business cases and ultimately execution of separating the majority of the shared operating environment.

The governance model was a fundamental element of the success. It provided a forum for complex commercial and shared service issues to be addressed and resolved over the course of the program. It also allowed each entity the opportunity to establish its own approach to separation but within pre-agreed constraints and timeframes.

Fusion was able to bring its change methodology, program experience and methodology, collateral and its leadership to drive this program to its successful outcome.
